Wagman, a history professor at Kingsborough Community College (CUNY), explores what happened to certain stars which were observed and recorded by Bayer, Flamsteed, and Lacaille but which do not appear in modern star catalogues. Part one discusses lettered stars, while part two discusses numbered stars. In both parts, constellations are arranged in alphabetical order, and include a synopsis, a list of all stars with catalog numbers and visual magnitude, and an account of problematic stars with notes explaining what became of them. Included among the illustrations are all 49 constellations from Bayer's Uranometria of 1603, Lacaille's planisphere of the southern sky from his Coelum Australe of 1763, and all 27 of Flamsteed's charts from his posthumously published Atlas Coelestis of 1729.
