Juan Ponce de Leon and the Spanish Discovery of Puerto Rico and Florida

In addition to providing biographical information about the first European to set foot on what is now Florida, Fuson (history, U. of South Florida) presents what he calls an "uninterrupted history of European activity" in the region (including the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico). He emphasizes the discovery aspects of de León's activities and his role as first governor of Florida, but gives only passing regard to the native peoples who inhabited the region well before Spaniards "discovered" it.
