This meticulously researched monograph was commenced by Ken Annable who directed the excavation of the early pre-Christian Saxon cemetery in the Vale of Pewsey between 1969 and 1976. Following Annable's death the work was taken up by Bruce Eagles with the support of an international team of twenty-two specialists, many of them renowned in their fields. The 104 graves of the Blacknall Field cemetery contained a wealth of high quality and remarkable grave goods, including swords, spears, shields, a remarkably wide range of brooches, beads, neck rings, dress pins, knives and pottery. These artefacts and the human remains are described and discussed along with the social structure of the community and placed in their wider European context.
