In 1846, thousands of people moved westwards to Oregon and California in wagon trains. This is the story of Charity Collins and the families in the Tennant Party who made the 2000-mile journey that year.
Charity and her sister Fanny are both of marriageable age, but they have very different attitudes towards the opposite sex. Charity slowly and painfully discovers her own profound ignorance during the course of the migration. Fanny, it seems, has a much clearer idea of what she wants and how to get it.
A large cast of characters comes into focus in the course of the story. The routines and demands of the constant travelling are interrupted by accidents, encounters and pauses at the various forts, but finally they arrive at the west coast. Which some might say is where the real adventures begin…
