This is the autobiography of an office boy from a County Durham mining family whose dream was to become Chairman of his organisation in the City of London. Having experienced mining tragedies within the family Ken Wilkinson's parents were determined their son would not under any circumstances wear miner's overalls to earn a living. They secured an almost unpaid clerical position for him with a firm of solicitors in Bishop Auckland.
Ken was soon to become an asset to his employers as his knowledge and interest in the law grew. But when Ken's father was promoted and moved to Newcastle, Ken was too young to be left behind and was given a job of convenience in the insurance firm in which his father was employed. As a result of the upheaval in his early years, Ken was presented with some wonderful opportunities which included being invited to return to the firm of solicitors after completing his National Service, to take up his Articles and have the opportunity to qualify as a solicitor. However, after displaying acting skills, he was also offered the chance to be sent, with full financial support from a famous Tyneside actress, to The London School of Drama, to study to become a professional actor. Ken was also fortunate to have his position within the insurance organisation reserved pending his return from the RAF.
So, at least three exciting opportunities presented themselves. How did his dream become reality?
