ALBERT 'AJAX' ADAMS was the first Shipwright to be ordered by the Admiralty to spend a year at sea before becoming a Royal Naval Constructor. His orders were to secure for the future Royal Navy, the best advantage of his training, knowledge and experience. With officer rank but without the responsibility or the knowledge of Naval etiquette, this diary records his daily life in 1909 on HMS Implacable.
With frockcoat and sword, he took his camera and his bicycle on board. He describes the Naval reviews, loading coal, the cross channel flights of Bleriot and Latham, battle practice, directing gun-fire, miss-firing of torpedoes, lecturing to Midshipmen, buying a golf club to learn the game and night fishing. His written words are amplified by sketches, notes and additional photos.
His subsequent career was spent designing cruisers, one of which was HMS Ajax from which his nickname was derived and all proceeds of this book will be donated to HMS Ajax & River Plate Veterans Association.
