For more than fifty years, every since they first met in World War II, when the Sergeant was in the United States Army Medical Corps and the Nun was working in the Spanish Town Leprosarium, Jamaica, West Indies, they have been writing editorials, essays and books covering their experiences in working toward the conquest of leprosy. Hundred of their readers suggested that they combine some of their writings and publish them in book form from which they would be able to draw inspiration.
The Sergeant and The Nun were in the process of sorting out thousands of papers, diaries, essays and memory pieces to fulfill this request, when the Nun suffered a massive stroke and left this earth on Easter Monday, 1995. The Sergeant, wanting to keep this promise and to leave a lasting memorial to Sister's eventful life, completed the work.
It is hoped that the extracts, fitting almost every occasion and event over the last 50 years, will serve to give the reader hope, joy and thoughts on which to ponder. As Sister said in the boo, Tow Hearts, One Fire, relating her difficult times with Ruby, a recalcitrant patient at the leprosarium, "If there is a crown awaiting me in heaven I hope it contains a Ruby." The Sergeant, in his eulogy on Sister's death, stated, "Not only is there a ruby in her crown, but she left diamonds and emeralds as well - precious gems of her thoughts transcribed on paper."
We hope this book will bring back many memories for our past readers and lead new ones to a better understanding of the work of the Damien-Dutton Society for Leprosy Aid, which devotes its efforts to providing funds for rehabilitation, education and recreation to leprosy patients in all parts of the world.
