Adam Staudt and his family leave their Palatinate village of Frankenthal in 1753 to escape the devastation left by the Thirty Years War. After a terrifying two-month ocean voyage below deck, they arrive in Philadelphia and trek to the Tulpehocken Settlement, the Indians land of the turtles extending west on today's U.S. 422 from the Schuylkill River in Reading, PA.
The Staudts endure years of extreme hardship in the wilderness. Then comes 1776. Son Dieter enlists in General Peter Muhlenberg's battalion and fights in the battles around Philadelphia. The Revolution does not end with the war. Dieter becomes a Pennsylvania Assemblyman and plays a key role in the Fries Rebellion, a protest that helped deny President John Adams his bid for a second term in the election of 1800.
