The Transparent Event: Post-Modern Christ Images

On the cover I call this "a book about the meaning of life." In it I share the images of ten Christian thinkers of the last half of the twentieth century who have helped me articulate the meaning of life. In another section I share the edge of my understanding of the transparent event - that which is universally the ground of meaning. In the next section, of contexts and exercises, I hope to help the reader clarify his or her Christ image. The last section, "edifying discourses," is a pull-together of the book in lay terms.

I am not trying to be controversial. I am not a liberal, a conservative, or a heretic, unless one goes back to the original meaning of the word: "to choose," or choosing the parts of the tradition that make fundamental sense to one's life experience. I expect readers to dialogue with what I have written: neither swallow it whole nor burn it. We can only believe what we honestly believe, not what we are supposed to believe. I trust a new Christ image that makes sense to our real lives in this world will help bring us together rather than divide us. This is the bottom-line of an authentic Christ image.
