In 1925, an uncle marries his niece (an Avunculate Marriage). They have two children, the first normal, the second vastly retarded. In 1935, during the Great Depression, the father takes the now 6-year-old retarded child in the car with him. The garage door is closed. He starts the engine.

Tamma, the surviving child, is ten years old when "An Incident in the Family" occurs. As she grows up, she unpeels layer after layer about the incident, asking, whose idea was it? Her father's? Her mother's? Both?

What she discovers becomes a driving wedge in her marriage and the cause of her crushing midlife crisis. Can she ever comes to terms and survive the rippling effects of the "Incidentt inthe Family"?
