The penalty phase of Leonard Longchamp's jury trial had resulted in a hung verdict over the death sentence or life in prison with a chance of parole. The beautiful Dr. Laura Birney, a psychiatrist at Pittsburg State Prison, was hired by the district attorney, Lloyd France, to help in deciding if he should retry the case. Whether she would be successful in her task was yet to be proven.

Who would ultimately win out? The beautiful, gutsy, and supremely intelligent Doctor Birney? Or the conniving Leonard, while he continued satisfying his sociopathic tendencies even as the doctor psychoanalyzed him?
