The Grand Illinois Trail is huge, running a massive loop around the suburbs and across northern Illinoisit's over 50 miles long. You can trek from one corner of the state to the other, pedal along the blue shores of Lake Michigan and hike along scenic, rugged river bluffs. Explore old stagecoach routes, follow along railroad corridors and river bottoms and experience Illinois nature. The course runs between towns and between neighborhoods, making a route that can be used for enjoyable errands and trips. Stop at noteworthy destination gems such as Starved Rock State Park, Chicago Lakefront, Mississippi Palisades State Park and historic Galena. Trail also provides access to unique natural environments and along some of the most valuable rivers in the state. It is also a trail of exploration and discovery for more than recreation; it's a unique way to learn about Illinois history. All-in-all, the trail connects the resources of 12 existing trails, 12 major parks and at least 45 cities and villages
