Three Weeks in Utica continues the story of 13-year-old Rose Stewart in Utica where she must face the challenge of another new place, more new relatives, and seemingly endless work. Overwhelmed and homesick at first, she meets a neighbor girl, Maggie Evans, with whom she has much in common, and they soon become friends. Just as she starts to feel better about her situation, Seth and Samuel, Maggie's older brothers, appear, giving Rose more to fret about.
Rose discovers the prosperity and breathtaking surroundings of the 1840's city of Utica when she visits the Clinton Market, tours the city, attends a frolic at one of its many mansions, and picnics on the banks of the Erie Canal. Life on a farm in 1840 was hard work, but people did take time out for fun and enjoyable neighborly activities. During her stay, Rose learns how to quilt, participates in a quilting bee, and makes butter the old-fashioned way. She also has some clashes with Maggie's brother, Seth, and makes a new friend of Maggie's other brother, Samuel.
This book will introduce you to and maybe even surprise you with some interesting facts and tidbits about Utica history, mingled into the story. The back of the book contains a Glossary, Life in Utica in 1840, a Map and a Utica Timeline and Milestones. What a great way for children to learn about the history of their area and everyday life in 1840.
