Anna wants to be accepted in the new village where her family moves in 1857. She makes a dreadful first impression, trying to fit in with her new schoolmates. Charlie, her twin brother, couldn't care less.

Then there is Hattie. She seems to dislike everyone. No amount of effort on Anna's part seems to work in forming a friendship. Hattie's pranks not only anger Anna and Charlie but most of the other students too.
