In this autobiographical retrospective the author has examined the influences in her life that determined who she is today. The influence of her father, a protestant clergyman and the influence of the church and society in creating the mold of respectability into which a 'good' Christian woman should fit, all combined to break her spirit, spontaneity and individuality.

In recent years she has explored the roots of her early concepts of a woman's role in society; her awareness and acceptance of male/female inequality and the reasons why she felt guilty if she failed to please society and authority. She has come to understand how these influences affected her own choices and behaviour in her career and in the raising her own family. Fueled by this new understanding, she has accepted the past, is changing the present and influencing the future.
