A new British magistrate has been appointed to a small Irish village where ‘sensible’ is an adjective of last resort. On his first visit to the local fair he finds himself in the coils of a hysterical chain of misunderstandings as an innocent attempt to return a borrowed pitchfork is inflated by gossiping villagers and a deaf old woman into a lurid story of adultery, revenge and murder! Bowing to the inevitable, the magistrate does the only 'sensible' thing under the circumstances… and arrests the still living 'murder victim!'
