Cantos Judeo-Espa Oles

Cantos Judeo-españoles is a comprehensive introduction to Judeo-Spanish songs, which are sung by women throughout the Sephardic diaspora. Silvia Hamui does a textual analysis of these songs and traces the ideological influences that were borrowed from the various local contexts from Morocco to Turkey. She examines the influence of official religion on the songs, as well as practical applications against the evil eye and bad spirits. Hamui has in-depth analysis of the role of song in the life cycle, including birth, circumcision, Bar Mitzvah, wedding, miqvah, and funeral.
