The twenty pound, webbed-footed and clawed Myocastor coypus or nutria is capable of devouring up to a quarter of its weight every day. Its two large orange teeth can rip apart anything that looks like vegetation including crops, lawns, and trees. Native to South America, the nutria's only value is its fur. The citizens of Twin River weren't happy when they escaped their pens and took over the town. They called them swamp beavers and they blamed Big Al Craft for it.
Swamp Beaver Fever is an outrageous and lighthearted yarn concerning the odd and unusual life and times of Alphonse Craft. Young Alphonse never considered himself unusual or odd, not anymore than his father, Big Al, who christened him in 1970 with his own name but never his own story - not even a photograph. Little Alfie always had the sense that Big Al was protecting him from something. He liked that. He figured it's what fathers do, but he never imagined he would need three aliases.
Big Al has big plans from Little Alfie. The trouble is that Big Al has his own troubles - he never divulged his that he worked for the US government from 1960 to 1969 in Cuba, France, and Colombia, in drug enforcement - they weren't very good at their job. Big Al Craft returns with nothing but a large bag bearing a pair of big-toothed swamp beavers, wrestling for scraps above a hidden layer of cocaine. That's how it all started. Little Alfie quickly learns the Craft craft of anonymity.
