The Kanawha & Michigan Railroad: Bridgeline to the Lakes 1888-1922

Hand signals, and many other longtime railroad traditions, are fast becoming a lost art. That’s the missing dimension that Donald L. Mills, Jr., is helping to fill in with his history of the Kanawha & Michigan Railway Co., a predecessor component of Norfolk Southern that operated between Corning, Ohio, and Gauley Bridge, West Virginia, more than a century ago. His research unearthed dozens of rare photographs, faded newspaper articles and homespun reminiscences from dusty library shelves, steamer trunks stowed in spider-infested attics, and almost-forgotten memories of people who lived in an age when railroads were king.
