In 1991 on a hike along the Pacific Crest Trail to Canada from Mexico Jack had a dream one night in which a woman calling herself The Connector appeared and told him she was to help steer his life. Though he had gone to sleep dressed for the cold of February, he awoke the next day splayed naked under a newly risen sun. Although it was freezing he felt no cold. A weeklong rain began three days later and made continuing the hike impossible, so he hitchhiked into San Diego where he met the angel in his dream when he went to see about renting a room at a boarding house.
