"In May, 1943, sixteen pilots stepped ashore on a desert atoll. They didn't know why they were there or what they were going to fly. They found a runway scraped out of coral, but no planes. Then a US Navy ship arrived carrying twenty-seven Douglas A-24 dive bombers. Sixteen Army pilots boarded the US Navy carrier, got a quick briefing, strapped into unfamiliar aircraft, fired up the engines, and held on. Chucked into the sky thousands of miles away from their last flight, each had about ten seconds over open water to remember how to fly.
