Michael Dolan Mccarthy: A Novel

In this suspense-filled thriller, a resilient biracial teen deals with grief, anger, prejudice, fear, and his first serious romantic relationship as he tries to take care of his younger white siblings when their mother dies suddenly. The McCarthy family has had one hard time after another and Michael has been responsible for getting his young siblings home safely each day. When he stops to flirt with Shenia, the girl he's liked for months, his little sister goes ahead and finds their mother dead. Sure the authorities will separate them all, Michael and Shenia decide to take the kids to the grandparents they've never known. As Michael struggles with the effects of his racial identity, he hopes his young siblings will be accepted because they are "cute little white kids." Michael Dolan McCarthy was a quarter-finalist in the Amazon Breakout Novel Awards and the screenplay was a finalist in the Sacramento International Film Festival. While this novel will appeal to anyone ages 12 through adult, at-risk or troubled teens who don't like to read (reluctant readers) are the primary target audience. The reading level is comparable to that of a common newspaper.
