Mr. Barne's Experiment

Imagine a world void of compassion, ruled by an unrestricted brand of lawless capitalism. There are no taxes, no social programs for the poor, and no financial incentives to give charitably. Social security has dried up and the old are begging for bread at the doorsteps of their children. Those without children who have not had the good fortune to stockpile wealth in savings accounts, and those labeled 'defective' and are otherwise handicapped are left to beg in the streets with tin cups in their hands. Mr. Maurice Barnes, the newly elected governor of California, attempts to bring about such a world, oblivious to the needs of those around him. At first he is applauded as the state looks for unconventional ways to recover from financial loss and blames the poor. But in a short time, people realize they should have been careful what they wished for as the people cry out and there is rioting, uproar, and chaos everywhere. People in leadership eventually learn a valuable lesson and adopt the philosophy of generosity and kindness and to the surprise of some, victory comes without it causing the collapse of the economy.
