The White Shoes

Ciprián, raised in the rural Puerto Rico of the mid-twentieth century, loves to follow his instincts. Thanks to them, he marries the most coveted girl in town, starts up as many businesses as he pleases, and even runs for mayor. No one needs to know about his addiction to whiskey on the rocks, his escapades with Rita, his dubious dealings, among others. Regardless, Mr. Alzheimer will make sure his mind is wiped clean of it all. I know what I know because I live with him. I am his soul.

My story is interrupted by a girl who, according to her spiritist (Puerto Rican folklore) parents, is haunted by spirits, but according to the experts at the mental hospital, is not right in the head. Her diary tells it all.

The White Shoes is novel of intrigue that encompasses various aspects of life, at all stages, and from diverse perspectives. It portrays the dire consequences of trivial choices and the storm of emotions that inevitably follows, its intensity measured only by the mental state of those who live them. Beyond entertainment, it aspires for the reader to face his prejudices on how life should be lived, to evaluate the sanity of his beliefs and consciously reaffirm them or, better yet, redefine them.
