After her son experiences problems at his school, Harriett Epps, an African-American mother, decides to run for a seat on the Board of Education in the university community of Morgan Springs. The town’s proudly progressive movers and shakers quickly adopt Harriett and express strong support for her candidacy. However, their support is based on assumptions about who Harriett is, what she believes and how she might serve on the Board. How will Morgan Springs’ political heavyweights respond when they learn they are mistaken? What will it mean for Harriett’s electoral prospects?
