Nicol's Way: Autism ~ A Journey of Discovery

What do you do when your child is diagnosed with autism? What do you do when the professionals know little about this developmentally delayeddisorder? Where do you go for help?

Nicol Sespico was born on August 12, 1982, a happy and healthy baby. She appeared to be developing normally, yet at 12 months, Nicol never responded to her name, she had little eye contact, her muscles were flaccid and she made no attempt to walk, point, verbally communicate or use language. I knew something was wrong. I expressed my concerns to the professionals only to be told that I was over-reacting. I had a gut feeling to do more in an effort to understand this peaceful, loving child. I couldn't explain it, but my determination to help Nicol was a drive, a passionate force. I couldn't give up. I had to trust myself.

Through persistence, research, support of family and friends and the opening of our minds and hearts, many doors opened for us which in turn led to many new challenges and choices. Follow our Journey of Discovery in Nicol's Way.
