We had met at the Grand Prix motorcycle races and soon became friends as well as colleagues, sharing rental cars, hotel rooms, and scoops. We enjoyed a similar strain of dark humor, extreme pedantry, premature curmudgeonliness, and a deep mistrust of pretension and self-importance.
