This book is a poetical work of John Irvine describing Kiwi life through time, and the 1960s.
John writes:

Once upon a time, a long time ago in a dying writer's forum online, a poet posted a humorous piece about an ant. Just the one poem in spite of the many giggles one can get from an ant. If I remember rightly the final line included the word pissant. As everyone knows what the word means I shall not bore you with a definition.
I believed it was clever to choose a word punning the main protagonist, and somehow the idea must have taken root. A couple of years later my out-of-control brain regurgitated the idea, and it tasted good!

I took Brian for a nostalgic journey through a lot of my own like, substituting him for me. I did apply some awkward scenarios to his journey, but he seemed take them in his stride. Well, he would have had he been wearing strides. So here we have a hapless rat wandering hopelessly through time enjoying (or otherwise) the 60s, music, love, cars, kiwi, communism and a multitude of other sins. Most poems end with a pun on rat.
