In the rural South, set against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement, a strong friendship forms between three unlikely characters: ten year old tomboy Alison Mayflower, eccentric Percival Huckstep and Ruth James, a woman rumored to practice voodoo. After the death of her father, Alison moves to Perseverance Georgia and learns of an unsolved murder from decades before. In the process of uncovering the truth about this murder, Alison discovers things about Perseverance and her new friends that are difficult to face and will change her forever.
