I Must Have Picked a Bad Time (to be in love)

In 1975 the word lesbian was rarely heard in conversation. Homosexuality was still viewed as a mental illness in many countries and gays were treated as freaks. In high school, the author fell in love with another girl and for five years they maintained a secret relationship while trying to appear 'normal' to everyone else. The secrecy eventually became unbearable for Dru, resulting in a complete mental breakdown and a long term struggle with agoraphobia, anxiety and depression.

Treatment at the time included shock therapy and a regimen of psychotherapeutic drugs. 'Coming out' was not an option until a few years later, but by then Dru's lifestyle of alcohol abuse and anxiety attacks had affected all aspects of her life, including study and employment opportunities.

This book documents Dru's recovery as she searches for the courage to accept her disposition and lead a fulfilling and productive life.
