Past: "Mia stared at Stefano hard. “I’m not asking. And I’m not lying to any SuFites ever again.” She turned her stern eyes to the SuFites in the tent. “Who wants to distribute malaria and give certain, well less than truthful answers to people who will suggest I beat up a bunch of poachers, and escaped being eaten by a several lions?"
Present: "Though the African life was one Mia was used to, she was still surprised by her resilience and cunning during the past few months. After seven years of running around the continent assisting communities affected by flooding, providing health and education programs as well as supporting wildlife conservation, she easily had spent more of her days in Somalia, Kenya and various other African countries than her own first world home. But her current circumstances were different: she had no control. When her flight headed to assist a project in northern Somalia (referred to as Somaliland), an adventure she could easily handle, had been knocked off course during a storm and then proceeded to be ripped apart, Mia found herself fighting for survival in Ethiopia. With minimal tools, limited food resources and her body still weak – well, weak for her – she felt more like a guest in an unforgiving land than ever before. Her goal, other than survival, was to find a not-for-profit organisation [perhaps even her own Sustainable Futures Inc (SuFu)] working in Ethiopia, or somehow locate one of her indigenous contacts who could help her find a consulate or international airport. The likelihood of her success wasn’t high, due to the military conflicts ongoing in Ethiopia, as well as the natural environmental and wildlife obstacles. But considering that she’d survived the last few months, and taking into account she was the infamous Mia Raven – SuFu’s resident acrobatic-dancer-fighter-ninja, as Veronica put it–then just maybe she could find success."
Within the Waves in the Desert Series, two timelines progress side by side, highlighting just how the once naive, guarded-romantic, unfit, 20-something year old from San Francisco who was used to leaning on her supportive friends, finds herself fighting for survival on her own. As the second instalment unfolds, Mia's past depictions show her exceptional physical and acrobatic prowess escalating, and her leadership role developing into more responsibility than she could have ever imagined. Mia Raven, along with her associates and best of friends Veronica Duke and Kevin Manning, are set on a path to prove just how the Average can create the Extraordinary.
