Life was not always easy. When Pat developed a serious infection, the boys faced the possibility that they would find themselves alone.

Ray had his own brush with trouble when he tumbled off a moving road grader and was flown to hospital in the Governor General's personal aircraft.

Through it all they survived and Pat was determined to build them a real home even if it meant doing it one block at a time. When she took over as cook at The Mt. Isa Mines that is exactly what she did. Much to her dismay a local newspaper thought it was a story worth telling and accompanied the story with a photo of Pat hard at work. The photo was hardly flattering but it did make Pat a minor celebrity for a week or two
