In 1941, when a pregnant young widow is brutally murdered in Cape Alden, New Jersey, Carl Morton has no trouble convincing the sheriff that his mentally ill wife Celia is the culprit. Within days of finding the body, she is charged, tried, found guilty, and sent to an insane asylum where she hangs herself two years later.
The murder case was closed with her arrest, but now it looks like Celia has decided it's time to blow the case wide open. As they start talking to old-timers who knew the major players in the crime, Mari and Phil become convinced that Celia didn't kill Charlotte Johnson, the 20-year-old widow with a bad reputation. Where the sheriff failed, Mari and Phil succeed as the list of suspects grows, and someone in town grows anxious to stop them. Will they find the real killer before it's too late?
