Lenore Graston and Janet Sparkski are having the worst day ever. What with losing their jobs at Weaver Security before lunch and then spending the afternoon with the police after discovering the brutally murdered body of their former co-worker, Margaret Whipply. Earth is the last place Novald and his team want to be. Not with the sharp increase in crime plaguing his patch of the galaxy over the past few weeks and the resources of the Guild stretched thin. Still orders are orders, and, given these facts, he figures this mission to monitor the minor invasion of Weaver Security and the problems he has been seeing must be linked. He expected to quickly discover the goal of the takeover and leave. He did not expect a murder, one that must have been committed by a member of the covert team at Weaver's since the weapon that killed Margaret Whipply is beyond Earth's current level of technology. Out of his jurisdiction and his depth, he is grateful when Lenore and Janet offer their help. Now all they need to do is find a murderer and figure out the reason for the infiltration in order to fix the galaxy.
