Gene's love for Jan motivated him to write the first sonnet for her birthday in 1956. The years between 1956 and 1974 when he wrote the second sonnet were filled with work, babies and life. In
London, following the death of his niece and some dear friends, he began again putting his feelings on paper. These were collected in a red leather journal that Jan has treasured in private over the years.
Now she has decided to share this side of their father with his children and grandchildren. While he was always a loving, joy-filled personality in their lives, laughing and crying openly, he was a man of few words when it came to his deepest feelings. May this little volume add a new dimension to their understanding of him.
