Birds Being Birds by Donna Castle Richardson, Ed.D.
Birds Being Birds is an early childhood concept book designed to teach rhyme through poetry, enjoy music by singing, learn basic colors by seeing different birds, imitate locomotor movements, and learn the days of the week. Young children will love Birds Being Birds as they move from walking in the park on Sunday through the different days of the week to swimming in the pond on Saturday. On each day of the week there is a different setting where children can spy different colored birds. After reading the book children can repeat and imitate the movements by remembering the sequence of walking, strolling, skipping, jumping, running, hiking, and swimming. The poem can be sung using an old melody such as “I was walking the park one day” or make up a melody. Best of all at the end, the book provides information about the variation of colors and names of the birds featured in the book. This is a perfect beginning reader that will motivate children to read, think, remember, and enjoy books.
