Status Quon't

In STATUS QUON'T, Katilyn describes her theory that Christianity was created by humans, solely to control the behavior of other people, particularly women and homosexuals. She believes that religious leaders recognized fear as the number one source of human motivation and the fear of an immortal, all-powerful god as more paralyzing than fear of themselves, and thus, claimed to have intimate knowledge of God's wishes in order to influence others. Inspired by a published interview in which Gloria Steinem predicted the next wave of feminism is religion (or "politics in the sky"), coupled with Katilyn's fundamentalist Baptist upbringing, she walks through religious "mis-teachings" from her childhood and adolescence, tying them to modern-day feminist issues.

A far cry from the scholarly tone of the already published, male, atheistic authors, she uses the cheeky, succinct tone of a female millennial to weave her experience in the digital age throughout chapters such as TMI, AND TOO FAST. In this chapter, she discusses the new god that has been created, to whom we all must answer for our "sins"- the public, via Facebook and Twitter. She also ties recent feminist topics to their origins in religion, particularly in the chapter titled GASLIGHTING STARTED B.C.

Unlike self-help books, which attempt to persuade the reader to replace their current beliefs with the author's beliefs, Katilyn encourages readers to reject the status quo and replace it with a status quon't, which she describes as an ever-evolving state of critical thought and personalized belief systems. As you read on, she will compel you to establish your own belief system piece-meal from existing systems or entirely originally.
