Elijah McCoy spent 6 years in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was part of the 75th Ranger Regiment and worked with his best friend Juno Valdaz. This book finds Elijah 2 years after their return to Oakalnd City. Elijah has not been able to re-integrate with society. Juno is running an import/export business and Elijah is living in an apartment built into the back of the warehouse. Elijah works some days as a longshoreman and spends some of his time helping people with problems as a redeemer. He encounters three men beating on a young man on the ground just down the block from his favorite breakfast spot, Busters. He moves in to stop this hate crime and in the process leaves one attacker unconscious and another dead, while the third runs away. It starts a relationship between Elijah and Phillip Statham, the man he saved. This act of violence leads to a way out of the an increasingly violent life through a relationship with Phillip's friend. Elijah is hired the next day to remove a stalker from one of his co-workers sister. That ends up in a death once again. Juno suggests counseling for Elijah and diagnoses him with PTSD. The second death opens the door to a much larger violent confrontation that is directly aimed at Juno while really Elijah is totally to blame. The second death was a member of a Satanic Biker Club called The Sons of Perdition. They are determined to kill Juno. Elijah is drawn deeper and deeper into the battle to save Juno and has to ultimately turn to the police risking his own freedom. An underworld figure that wants Elijah as a full time executioner helps to find a way to eliminate the biker club in exchange for the rest of Elijah's life. Elijah does what he has to do to save his best friend while he fights for his freedom, sanity, and soul.
