The Appalachian: A Novel

At the age of 128, Carlton Jeffries has seen a lot of things. He is the last baby boomer, the last of a generation raised against a backdrop of dramatic social change. Now the year is 2087, and hardly anything remains of the radical ideas and dreams the boomers brought to life.

From the almost mythical, halcyon years of his baby boomer childhood in Nashville, to a distant but disturbingly recognizable future, Carlton endures. He tells his story while on the Appalachian Trail, that abiding constant in what has otherwise become an unrecognizable world. His story is a map of his generation, its follies, its foibles, and the legacy borne by the last living one of them. It is a brave new future for Carlton and his loyal coonhound Sam, if only they can make it over that next mountain.
