What the book covers: This update will refocus the book on Ubuntu and Debian since they are the most common distributions, while still including coverage of Red Hat, SuSE, and others. The market is looking for administrators and part of the qualifications needed for job openings is the authentication of skills by vendor-neutral third parties (CompTIA/Linux Professional Institute) and that is something competing books do not address.
Book I: Getting Started with Linux - Discuss distributions and show screenshots of many different distributions and discuss similarities/differences. Discuss Live CDs/DVDs, show how to install on hard drive or run from a flash drive. The focus will be on Ubuntu and Debian. How to install and configure peripherals, software packages, keep everything current, etc.
Book II: Linux Desktops - There have been so many forks from GNOME that it is now rare to find full GNOME in use anymore and the variants available depend on which distribution is installed.
Book III: Networking - Covers connecting to the Internet, including via the use of virtual machines, setting up a local area network (including a primer on TCP/IP), setting up a wireless network and wireless security, and managing a local area network using configuration tools and files.
Book IV: The Internet - Covers browsing the web securely and anonymously, reading Newsgroups and RSS feeds, using FTP, Hosting a web server with Apache, managing mail and news servers, and managing DNS.
Book V: Administration – Basic System Administration, managing users and groups. Managing file systems and working with Samba and NFS.
Book VI: Security- Introduction to Linux Security, Securing Linux, Vulnerability testing and computer security audits.
Book VII: Scripting - Begins with introductory shell scripting and then continues on to advanced shell scripting and ends with programming and compiling on Linux.
Book VIII: Linux Certification - Begins with Linux Essentials - what you need to know from the book to pass the exam and then explains the CompTIA Linux+ by LPI and other Linux certifications.
Series features: Linux All-in-One For Dummies, 6th Edition, is written in the friendly, humorous, and easy-to-understand style that is the hallmark of the For Dummies brand.
