The Changing Role of Government: The Reform of Public Services in Developing Countries

Batley and Larbi (both international development, U. of Birmingham) conclude a five-volume series on the reform of service delivery in developing countries. Each of the others focused on a particular area, such as health care and urban water, and this volume draws together the strands, comparing the experience between the individual sectors in selected developing countries of Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and Latin America. The fundamental question is whether the reduction of government services being pursued in developed countries is appropriate in developing and transitional countries.
