Making Women Martyrs in Tudor England

Hickerson (history, King's College, London) examines the portrayal of Protestant women martyrs in Tudor England. Examples are drawn from English martyrologist John Foxe's Acts and Monuments of the Christian Church and the writings of reformer John Bale. Hickerson shows how their stories of these disobedient and disorderly women reflected Protestant beliefs about the duty to defy royal and ecclesiastical authority where it conflicts with a higher morality.
