Published in 1840, this long and eloquent essay championed and codified the disparate ideas taking form in English architecture under the rubric of the Gothic Revival.  The seven lamps of the title refer to the qualities toward which good architecture must aspire:  Sacrifice, Truth, Power, Beauty, Life, Memory, and Obedience.
