In 1844 the author, assisted by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, assembled this treasury of critical writings modeled after William Hazlitt’s 1825 Spirit of the Age. Authors treated biographically and critically include Charles Dickens, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Thomas Carlyle, Mary Shelley, and Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, among others.
