On September 11, 2001, the United States of America was attacked by al-Qaeda, a radical Islamist group led by Osama bin Laden. Nearly 3, 000 lives were lost that day. It would be tempting to believe that America is the principal enemy of al-Quaeda and like-minded groups, and that 9/11 was simply the first shot in a war between America and the Islamic world, but that would be wrong on all counts: America is not the principal enemy, 9/11 was not the first shot, and this is not a war between America and the Islamic world.
