It is 1981 and Doris is fresh out of high school, living with her older sister Effie in California, and trying to figure out what to do with her life. The chemistry hangs thick in the air as Braiden, a college student, and Doris talk for hours and snuggle in each other's arms on a crushed velvet couch. Inseparable from that moment on, the two lovers soon discover that neither is fulfilled by their part-time jobs-Doris as a drugstore clerk and Braiden as a longshoreman. When Braiden decides they should move to Ketchikan, Alaska, where his brother lives, Doris knows she is not wilderness material and is reluctant to go. Braiden finally convinces Doris to reject her parents' wishes, and together they begin a life-changing adventure.
Living in the wild proves to be more of a challenge than Doris ever imagined. Booze and drugs flow faster than any river current in Ketchikan, Alaska, forcing Doris to bravely face the truth about not only herself, but the man she loves.
