History of British Fishes at the Authors disposal, they have been gladly made use of in the great majority of instances throughout the following pages. Most of these engravings were executed under Mr. Yarrells immediate superintendence during a lengthened term of obsen-ation and it was felt, therefore, that it would be difficult, if not impossible, to supply equally perfect and reliable designs within any available period.
