As a young girl, Alice Carey comes to realise that 'home' can mean different things. The only daughter of Irish immigrants to the United States of America, her isolated and sometimes violent childhood is transformed when her mother begins work as maid to legendary Broadway producer Jean Dalrymple. In Miss D.'s elegant Park Avenue town house, Alice is exposed to a lifestyle she has only known through films. And then, once her mother has saved enough, they go home - to 1960s Ireland, a place radically different from New York in every way...
