In a historic beatification , the Roman Catholic Church led by Pope Benedict XVI beatified on October 28, 2007 some 498 martyrs from the Spanish Civil War , the greatest numbers of persons ever beatified in the Church's 2000-year history . They originated from all parts of Spain including the dioceses of Barcelona , Burgos , Madrid , Mérida , Oviedo , Seville , Toledo , Albacete , Cartagena , Ciudad Real , Cuenca , Gerona , Jaén , Málaga and Santander . Their ages ranged from 15 years to 78 years old. Although almost 500 persons, they are a small part of the Martyrs of the Spanish Civil War . Background Pope Benedict XVI was not the first pope to beatify large numbers of Spanish martyrs from the Civil War in that country. Pope John Paul II beatified some 500 Spanish martyrs in several beatifications since 1987.
