Mary Duncan joins the Peace Corps to teach people how to build fish ponds and grow fish for food directly after college in 1979. Being posted in Yoko, Cameroon in Africa, she is not only isolated from other Americans but she must live in a mainly French speaking Muslim world without electricity, running water, modern plumbing and only a small dirt bike to move about. Mary gains a unique view of what life is really like in Yoko. Surprises include snakes, brushes with romance, bush taxi rides as well as Camerooninan views on a wide range of topics such as homosexuality, polygamy, woman’s rights, the nuclear bomb programs and whether or not pygmies should be classified as human. The first year Mary is occupied with work and survival. During the second year, as the locals begin to know and trust her, she gets a look under the surface and discovers not everything is as innocent as it seems. Mary learns much about the world around her and discovers many things about herself.
